Learn More >Dye-sublimation and thermal-transfer ribbons use a special heat transfer process to transfer color from a printer ribbon to the blank plastic card. What's the difference between the two? Thermal-transfer printing is reserved for monochrome prints, transferring single-colored ink on an ID card instead of full-color. Dye-sublimation ribbons, on the other hand, print full-color cards using a variety of colored dyes. Cards printed with dye-sublimation print ribbons have a richer color and are clearer, while thermal transfer printer ribbons result in a coarser look.
